Registering a business as a creator in Germany: step by step
As soon as you earn money with your content on a regular basis, you usually need to register a trade (Gewerbe) in Germany. It is easier than many think – often it takes a few minutes online.
- Often online – Many municipalities offer online registration.
- Small fee – A small amount, depending on the municipality.
- Before you start – Register before your first earnings.
- Tax registration – Then submit the questionnaire to the tax office.
Do I need a trade registration as a creator?
Anyone who sells content independently, on an ongoing basis and to make a profit is usually carrying on a trade – whether via subscriptions, pay-per-view or tips. Whether a freelance (e.g. artistic) activity applies in an individual case is decided by the tax office. When in doubt: register and talk to a tax advisor.
How to register your trade
- Find your trade office (Gewerbeamt): the office of your city or municipality, often with an online form
- Fill in the form: personal details, business address and a short description, e.g. “creation and distribution of digital content via online platforms”
- Pay the fee: it varies by municipality
- Submit the tax registration questionnaire electronically via ELSTER within one month – you will then receive your tax number
What happens after registration
- The trade office automatically informs the tax office and the chamber of commerce (IHK)
- As a trader you are an IHK member – small businesses are often exempt from fees
- In the tax questionnaire you decide, among other things, on the small business scheme
- From now on: document income and expenses and build tax reserves
Which taxes apply to you is explained in taxes for content creators in Germany.
